Veteran's Day is a chance to reflect on, and show gratitude for, the sacrifice of many generations of Service members, from the American Revolution to Afghanistan. On November 11th our nation observes the 61th anniversary of Veterans Day, a day that honors America’s veterans for their patriotism, loyalty, and selfless sacrifice. With its origins dating back to 1919, when it was initially heralded as Armistice Day, paying tribute to veterans of World War I, Veterans Day has become a nation-wide commemoration of all who have served in the United States Armed Forces. When President Dwight D. Eisenhower issued the first Veterans Day Proclamation in 1954, it stated: “On that day let us solemnly remember the sacrifices of all those who fought so valiantly, on the seas, in the air, and on the foreign shores, to preserve our heritage of freedom, and let us reconsecrate ourselves to the task of promoting and enduring peace so that their efforts shall not have been in vain.” To the nearly 22 million veterans and active duty Service men and women across America, and those who have served throughout our nation’s history, today, our nation honors you with its greatest humility. And, to the families that support you I offer my sincerest and most humble gratitude. On behalf of the Office of Warrior Care Policy and its team, we thank you for your service, your sacrifices, and your commitment to preserving freedom at home and abroad. - Mr. James D. Rodriguez, Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense, Warrior Care Policy
