Since November 2008, the goal of the National Resource Directory (www.nrd.gov) has been to provide a central, web-based access point to federal, state and local services and resources that support recovery, rehabilitation and community integration for service members, veterans, families and caregivers. The result of a successful partnership between the U.S. Departments of Defense, Labor and Veterans Affairs, the Directory has been the go-to destination for veterans and their families to find trusted resources and information. All three agencies are committed to maintaining and improving the site today and in the future, including an annual review and vetting process of resources on the Directory. The Directory is one of the largest online collections of government and nongovernment resources specifically designed for veterans, service members, their families and military caregivers. With a unique collection of more than 16,000 organized and vetted resources, the Directory provides information covering a variety of topics, including benefits and compensation, education and training, family and military caregiver support, health, homeless assistance, housing, and other services and programs. “It continues to be an honor to participate in the National Resource Directory and have the ability to support service members, veterans, families and caregivers,” said Jonathan Morris, Program Manager for the Directory. “Being able to provide resources that are vetted to support the population is one of the best functions of the website.” During the past 10 years, the Directory has undergone regular changes to improve the ease of use and accessibility of its content. One such improvement is the creation of a widget, an online application that can be displayed on another website and enables a user to perform a function or access a service or resource. The widget can be placed on personalized home pages, blogs and other sites, such as allowing state government websites to use it to organize relevant resources and programs. Along with providing resources and assistance, the Directory continuously seeks partners who share in the mission of supporting those who serve. Such partners include the American Red Cross and the Community of Care, which is a collaboration of government agencies working together to provide health care and other services that are approved by a Department of Defense and Veterans Affairs. “The National Resource Directory has continued to be an important platform for VA, as it allows for greater access to resources that address VA benefits and services,” said Jennifer Rudisill, Acting Director, Office of Corporate Communications for the Veterans Benefits Administration at the Department of Veterans Affairs. “The collaboration between VA, DoD, and the National Resource Directory provides an effective means to assist the veteran community and their families for whom we are honored to serve.”
