Adaptive Sports Inspire Physical, Emotional Recovery at the 2016 DoD Warrior Games

June 13, 2016 | By Warrior Care Staff
On June 15 – 21, 2016, more than 250 athletes will gather at the United States Military Academy in West Point, New York for the sixth annual DoD Warrior Games, a Paralympic-style event which highlights the determined and resilient spirit of wounded, ill and injured service members, veterans and their families representing the U.S. Armed Forces and the United Kingdom Armed Forces. The Department of Defense offers year-round programs and resources to wounded, ill, and injured service members, their families, and caregivers throughout the continuum of care. One major demonstration of this support is the annual DoD Warrior Games, which celebrates the achievements of service members who participate in adaptive sports and reconditioning activities during their recovery and rehabilitation process. In addition to competitive adaptive sports, DoD offers other reconditioning activities, including healing arts, painting, ceramics, music therapy and expressive writing therapy to wounded, ill and injured members throughout the year. These reconditioning activities not only contribute to physical wellbeing, but also support the emotional, social and spiritual needs of wounded, ill, and injured service members, their families, and caregivers. This pairing of adaptive sports and reconditioning activities is vital to the recovery process, and the Warrior Games are a shining example of the great resilience our nation’s Armed Forces demonstrate in the face of adversity.
