Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Warrior Care Policy, Mr. James Rodriguez speaks with wounded, ill, and injured service members at Amazon Web Services Technical Boot Camp on June 6, 2016. HERNDON, Va. – On June 6, 2016 10 wounded, ill and injured service members embarked on a five-day Amazon Web Services (AWS) Technical Boot Camp specifically designed to prepare them for functional roles in cloud computing. Despite having to navigate multiple medical appointments throughout the week, those who completed the boot camp made it a priority. The Office of Warrior Care Policy coordinated this specialized opportunity through its Education and Employment Initiative (E2I), which is designed to match wounded, ill and injured service members with educational and career opportunities that will help them successfully transition to civilian life. “E2I provides the customized, flexible and personal support our wounded, ill and injured service members require,” said James Rodriguez, the deputy assistant secretary of Defense for Warrior Care Policy who spoke with service members at the conclusion of the boot camp. “The transition process for our wounded, ill and injured service members is often lined with many additional hurdles, but customized training and mentoring opportunities can help ensure they are better prepared to successfully transition into a post-military career.” The opportunity for service members to take part in the AWS Technical Book Camp stems from Amazon’s pledge to provide no-cost training to service members and military spouses through First Lady Michelle Obama and Dr. Jill Biden’s Joining Forces Initiative. As part of the pledge, Amazon will offer AWS training to 10,000 service members, veterans and military spouses over the next five years. “At Warrior Care Policy, we are always working to find opportunities for wounded, ill and injured service members to participate in robust training and hiring programs,” Rodriguez said. “We continuously examine the possibility for future collaborations with the private sector.
