On Jan. 20, 1961, from the snowy steps of the United States Capitol, President John F. Kennedy addressed the Nation:
“And so, my fellow Americans, ask not what your country can do for you -- ask what you can do for your country.”
President Kennedy’s inaugural remarks reflected on over 300 years of national growth and agility, while empowering military and civilian populations to renew their commitment to America’s founding principles. Today, nearly 60 years after President Kennedy was sworn into office, Americans have fervently answered his call both at home and abroad, in peace and wartime – and for that, we thank you.
During May, the Nation joins to recognize the courageous men and women who fought for our freedoms, throughout history and in modern warfare. This month marks a number of historical dates, including Loyalty Day, Victory in Europe Day, Military Spouse Appreciation Day, Armed Forces Day and Memorial Day, all of which were established to honor the service and sacrifice made on part of our Armed Forces and their families.
The Department of Defense’s (DoD)
most important resource is its people. With over 1.3 million active duty Service members, nearly 742 thousand civilian personnel, and 826 thousand Guardsmen and Reservists, the veins of the American military family run deep.
That’s why DoD prioritizes programs and resources for wounded, ill, and injured Service members, as well as the caregivers and families who support them.
As DoD considers the future of warrior care, it is imperative that we not lose sight of those who have selflessly given, and will give, their lives to serve our country.
On Memorial Day, and every day, we express our gratitude and salute your service.
